    Can’t stall the car!

    Hi all,
Thought I would just throw this out there, I can slowly release the clutch in any gear (I have tried up to fourth) and it won’t stall and will just engage. Is this normal? My mechanic mate says it is seriously unusual. I can also sit in first gear (or any gear) and leave my foot off all pedals and the car will just drive along like an automatic. Have I got myself a freak of a vehicle or is this normal? The only way I can stall the car is if I come to a complete stop in gear, and even then it does not feel like it wants to stall until the very last second.
    What do you reckon?

    Yep, that's called power.

ISV control handles the engine will not stall. You can drive straight road in 6th with your legs off the pedals. It won't stall.

Sounds right to me. The I5 is a torquey engine, so pulling away in a high gear is possible, though can't understand why you'd want to do that.
It'll sit and truddle along in first without any input as it's just driving at your idle speed (air bypassing throttle through the ISV)

That's a torquey engine for ya

Gussing you've never driven a diesel.. they're th same, impossible to stall (though if they start to go, you've lost it, unlike a petrol that seems to prefer to keep running!)

This ain't no 1.1l fiesta where you have to bury the throttle when pulling off to avoid stalling!

I thought it was cars that do stall that had the problem.

Oh, and my 1.1 Fiesta didn't stall either. I could even get up to about 20mph just by using the hand throttle (choke).

If you put it in 6th it will pootle along at tick over at about 27 mph, so if your in slow traffic, then this is ideal, and it can be done with most modern cars as most modern cars have an ISV type device which tries its hardest to not allow the engine to stall, let the clutch out at tickover a little too quickly, then before it stalls dip the clutch again and the engine will rev to 1500-1800 revs then settle, this is the ISV opening and closing to save the engine. My partners Toyota Yaris 1.3 does this even, although you have to be alot more gentle.
